Route Overview

The Machame Route 7-Day is one of the most popular and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its stunning scenery and excellent acclimatization profile. Often called the “Whiskey Route,” it offers a perfect balance between challenge and success rate.

This route approaches the mountain from the south, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zones. Highlights include the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp before reaching Uhuru Peak.

The 7-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, significantly improving summit success rates compared to the 6-day option. It is ideal for trekkers who want better altitude adaptation, a higher chance of reaching the summit, and a more comfortable trekking pace.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
⛰ 3000m

Altitude: 1,829m → 3,000m
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Your adventure begins at Machame Gate on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration, you start trekking through dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, ferns, and rich wildlife.

The trail gradually ascends, often muddy and humid, offering a true jungle experience. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and exotic birds along the way.

Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight, surrounded by forest and fresh mountain air.

2
Machame to Shira Camp
⛰ 3840m

Altitude: 3,000m → 3,840m
Distance: 5–6 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, with rocky ridges and open landscapes.

As you gain altitude, enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys. You will reach Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on the mountain.

This is your first real exposure to higher altitude, so a slow pace is essential.

3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
⛰ 3960m

Altitude: 3,840m → 4,600m → 3,960m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

This is a key acclimatization day. You will climb gradually to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, where you may begin to feel the effects of altitude.

After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is essential for improving acclimatization and increasing summit success rates.

Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, offering one of the most iconic views on Kilimanjaro.

4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
⛰ 4035m

Altitude: 3,960m → 4,035m
Distance: 5–6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

Start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Though steep, it is a non-technical scramble and one of the most exciting sections of the trek.

After reaching the top, traverse ridges and valleys with spectacular views before arriving at Karanga Camp.

This shorter day helps your body adapt and prepares you for the summit push.

5
Acclimatization Day at Karanga Camp
⛰ 4035m

Altitude: 4,035m
Distance: 2–4 km (optional walk)
Hiking Time: 2–3 hours (optional)
Habitat: Alpine desert

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. You will stay at Karanga Camp and may take a short hike to a higher elevation before returning to camp.

This process helps your body produce more red blood cells and adapt to lower oxygen levels.

Rest, hydrate, and conserve energy as you prepare mentally and physically for the summit attempt.

6
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
⛰ 5895m

Altitude: 4,035m → 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest

Begin the day with a short trek to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. After lunch and rest, prepare for the midnight climb.

Around midnight, begin the ascent under the stars. Trek slowly and steadily toward Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight. This is the most demanding yet rewarding day of the trek.

7
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
⛰ 1829m

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Altitude: 3,100m → 1,829m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so take care on the descent.

At the gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your incredible achievement before transferring back to your hotel.
